What will I do in the New Year? I am thinking and I couldn’t plan anything. I still don’t find the significance of my life. Certificates and higher studying are not my aim, but I remain to follow them to kill my free time. I am very afraid that I am useless if I don’t continue more and more. The next generation is very intelligent and dynamic. I don’t want to repeat my parents’ trail. I still work as an accountant although I tried changing my career goal. I failed to change my working field in 2008. I don’t know what my job will be next year. Accounting, banking or security field. Hic hic, a mess.

I happened to find the surname of Thanh Giang. It was really a funny fact. I have thought his surname was Nguyen, like Nguyen Dinh Hoang, his brother for a long time. Frankly, his surname is Doan. I also knew that he still have practiced Vovinam. I really admired him. He is so patient that he still plays Vovinam. May I practice Vovinam again to recall old precious memories? I will be hurt myself when I try to stir all memories which slept peaceful from year to year. He is really good. He becomes a technical teacher. It seems that he just teaches only one class. I don’t know why I still like to search some information about him in internet. He maybe is the person who I cannot reach or approach near. I am care of what I want. I usually think pell-mell and talk with him, try to live meaningfully. I don’t know what I do if he stand in front of me. Perhaps I will smile gently to show a dimple. Then we will fight again like before

I and Sura connected again and lose in touch once time. I don’t understand why we stopped chatting. Perhaps I was too stubborn to explain anything. I felt offensive what he said to and just knew that not chatting was the best way for us. Should I find new chatters in 2009?

Ms. Thuan in Australia sometimes send emails to me. It is a pity not to have a friend like her beside. Anyways, persons should be selfish, should think to their own life, hope, goal first than another’s. It is miserable to manage to survive in this life. We are enough lucky to have close friends and relatives by our side.

I don’t keep in touch with Giang in Singapore. I hope he will study well. I didn’t have more time to understand him. It is a pity that we didn’t remain friendship. MY CHILDHOOD

When I was a child, I was very naughty. My brother and I just played all days and nights in every summer vacation.

When they went to work in the mornings, they left my brother and I inside with the main front door locked. Just few minutes after they were out of house, our friends gathered in front of the front door to talk with us. We sometimes played cards together to get used lottery, marbles, small photos or something like that. Even we climbed over the front door and left the back door unlocked to play outside. Of course, we came back the house before my parents returned it in their break time at lunch & after their ending work hours. We usually climbed trees to get green fruits whenever the trees

However, in the evenings, we had a little time to go out, within 1 hour from 5.00 – 6.00 pm as my father’s permission. I usually went to the large space near Saigon River where domestic ships were used to anchor after long voyage. All children from other places like to gather there. Some play kites in the sky full of wind. Some others play marbles. Until I entered university, I bought a kite to play with my younger brother. The kite flied high and far away in above blue sky with fantastic dreams. I practiced to ride bicycle myself at that place while my older and younger brother knew how to ride it owning to my help. I had to push it behind and keep balance for them to run smoothly.

Night was a really good time for me. It was the time to bother neighbor. We gathered a crowd in the corner of street to talk together or watch someone pass to tease them. Sometimes we roamed to rich houses near there to ring their doorbell. We were really pesky children. We rang it, and just ran fast before the host appeared. Some just knew to shake their head, but others scolded to be less angry. Remarkably, I used to steal mangos fruit at around 10.00 or 11.00 pm when most people closed the doors and fell in sleep. We used a straight bamboo tree with a hook at the beginning to pick them.

I think I had a happy and comfortable childhood although my parents seldom gave us the pocket money to spend. We lived in a suburb, so I had a lot of chance to enjoy the green rice fields, vegetable gardens, and flower fences. It was amazed to see that food which we had everyday grew. The time I felt happiest maybe was in summer of the year I was in sixth grade. We had a vacation in my cousin, far away my home about 6 kilometers. At that time, farmers just finished their successful harvest, and there was something left in the rice and sweet potato field for children to pick up. It was very tired to collect the bunch of paddy grain left somewhere in the fields when the sun started to rise higher. We caught fishes in the small pond or ditch at noon. I didn’t know how to go fishing and this made me feel very upset. All I did was following my cousins to keep fishes for them. I know going fishing is a good hobby to practice the impatience. We spent all afternoon to dig sweet potatoes budded out of the ground. In the evening, we gathered to enjoy a good meal from all achievements we had tried to do since the early morning. His mother boiled sweet potatoes or fried fishes.

Like other countries, Vietnam has a tradition of service to the community. People can help each other by many ways.
If you are an elementary school girl or boy, you can join in “Small Plan Movement”. Pupils will collect old books or newspaper for School Union. Beside that, teenagers can make cash contribution from their pocket money. It’s usually for pupils to volunteer their time to do what union plans in each campaign or activity.
If you are in a student of a university or college, you can take part in the Green Summer movement every summer holiday. This campaign lasts for two months. Another activity which they can register is blood donation of Red Cross. I think your blood you give maybe save a certain life.
Vietnam is a tropical country, so natural disasters, for example, storms, flood, hailstone, etc usually happen every year. After each awful disaster or terrible traffic accident, I see the television station often broadcast an announcement to raise a relief fund. The audiences will donate goods or financial contributions according to a certain address, and then they will count and announce the sum of collecting value. In addition, the television station can organize a favorite music show or even make an auction to sell valuable things, such as a beautiful or lucky phone number, a special picture…. Of course, all the proceeds of these programs will be for the relief fund.
For big companies or corporations, they volunteer to donate large sums to the specific objects following their own ways and purpose. They combine with the television to launch an impressive campaign, for instance, Dream House, Overcoming an obstacle yourself, etc. I like the ideas very much. They can advertise their brands by showing their responsibilities for community.
If you like to volunteer to do something, you can participate in scout groups in some pagodas or churches. Almost pagodas usually treat the public delicious dishes freely in the fifteen day of the lunar month, usually of the first, forth, and seventh lunar month. Therefore, you can spend your time to help monks or nuns cook some dishes, wash dishes, or serve meals. It’s very tired but fun.
There are many ways to volunteer to do something for somebody. After all, I suppose you will feel happy when you help someone.
PS: This is not my homework about volunteerism. However, when I study this lesson, I feel interested, and so I write it as my exercise. It’s ashamed to talk about my volunteer. The first thing I want to state that I like volunteer activity, but I don’t usually know how to do. I can’t donate my blood because I am very scared of injection. When I was in university, I couldn’t register in Green Summer Movement for I had an evening class at that time. Of course, I must make a cash donation whenever the headquarter asked for collecting fund. When I work for an embroidering company, I also made cash contribution for an old man who earned his living by driving a pedicab. Now I want to spend a small part of my salary for charity, but my parents still have a bank debt, and I don’t want to help another while there is a balance in their account. I know my parents can manage all the amount of rental rooms to pay bank without using my money, but I like to give my mother all the sums and just get back for miscellaneous expenses. That’s why I feel pity for myself

I can’t understand why I become fatter and fatter although I eat very little each day. My belly is rounder and rounder like Thanh Giang before. My body looks like a pig or a moving barrel. I remembered when we played Vovinam together in the Vo Dao Quan, he usually did press-up and sit-up at the end of training time. He did 20 times or even 30 times for each type. I wondered why he did so instead of short jump as my teacher asked me to do so. Now I know the reason why he did so, simply because of his pot-belly hahaha…. Therefore, I think I should to practice push-up and sit-up immediately. However, I can push my body up with 2 arms somehow while I could do such exercises 30 times before. Oh, my glorious days have gone away. Hic hic hic

TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS
When I was in the second year at university, I had an operation to draw back a bar of irons and 3 screws in my left arm. After that operation, I had to do exercises to recover the physical ability. Firstly, the exercises were performed at hospital. One day, I went to hospital as usual. Then I felt quite asleep while I was driving. As a result, I sideswiped a woman bringing a peanut basket. All peanuts poured over in the street. I turned back and saw that she still was OK. Therefore, I continued to go straight. There was no excuse for my irresponsibility. I should have stopped apologizing her and picking peanuts into her basket. Another motorbike stopped to ask why I react so after making an accident. I replied that I knew my fault, and she was still all right and was helped by the crowd surroundings, and I thought there was no need to stay there. The women sitting afterwards the driver claimed why I as least came back to apologize her. I continued blaming that I was in a big hurry to go to hospital. Therefore, they let me off.
The main reason I hadn’t stopped at that moment I really fear to be compensated for damages. I was afraid of not enough money to pay the hospital fee if she and the crowd were forced me to pay compensation while her health was still good.
Whatever I explained anything for this, I was not enough brave to accept my fault. I felt guilty what I had done. Until now I have owned her an apology.

THE PLACE WHERE I LIKE TO LIVE IN

THAO DIEN HOUSING HISTORY
I had lived in Thao Dien from birth to the time when I was a senior at university. It was unhappy to left there, but such was life. Now it is in the corner of Street 2 (or Do Quang Street) and Street 41. It has a southern aspect although most houses there have a western aspect. About 1/3 of its size, approximately 60 square meters, were sold in 2004 (not long after I graduated) with the price of 600 millions. It was rebuilt rooms for rent. Its income is about 3 millions VND per month now, not included the fees of electricity and water.
I couldn’t remember how many times it has been repaired. The first and also impressive image I could remember was a small pond in the front of an iron and rose-mallow fence (hàng rào dâm bụt) . In front of the pond was the line of 3 coconut-palms and a sour sop (mãng cầu). While everybody took a quick nap after lunch, I usually waded through the mud in the pond. The water level just reached above my knees. I was not sure that the pond was only for feeding ducks or fishes, even growing spinaches (rau muống). Next to the fence was a damson (cây mận). It was interesting to climb the damson and sit there. From these heights, it was easy to see the far view and someone outside. It also was the only way I talk with my neighbor friends when my parents was absent and locked the main gates.
I am always grateful to Thao Dien house. Its income from rental was the main financial source to help my brother and me at university. I regretted selling it so much. I couldn’t do anything to avoid it. It witnessed all my childhood and school hood as well as the time when I practiced Taekwondo and Vovinam.
I decided to work for M.E.I. (VN) project engineering and construction just because I wanted to be near it and to see it whenever I passed by. Although I know that I can’t stay Thao Dien house now, I still hope one day I can buy the old size back
FINANCIAL PROBLEMS
My parents were engineers in a factory of maintenance ship. Then Thao Dien house belonged to the ownership of government. They paid very cheap rental amount. To turn the ownership into themselves, they had to follow many complex procedures and at last paid a sum of 50 millions VND in 2002. It was very difficult to manage this amount. Eventually, they decided to loan in the agricultural bank. This was the beginning loan of my family. I remembered that we couldn’t sometimes pay the bank 2.5 millions VND per month on schedule. After that, my parents also got another bigger loan at other bank to pay the previous loan and invest mechanics. A couple of months later on, they still borrowed huge money from the bank to invest real estate. Of course, they were unable to meet their liabilities. As a result, to pay all debts, they had to sell a piece of land 125 square meters in Binh Duong, a hectare of field in Cat Lai, and at last an area of 60 square meters in Thao Dien. The investment showed that I have no financial analysis. I studied at finance, but I couldn’t help anything for my family’s investment. It was one of the bitter failures in my life.

Some people say that the schooldays are the happiest days of one’s life.
PHU DONG I ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
I was born and grown up in a suburb of Hochiminh. I had studied in a nearby small school only for 2 years. Then I transferred to Phu Dong I, an elementary school in Binh Thanh district. It was only 4 kilometers travel from where I lived. At that time, my elder brother was beaten terribly by a tall big fierce guy. Although he didn’t say anything to my parents because of the revenge, my mother easily guessed what had happened on account of the injuries in his body. Therefore, they decided to change school for my brother and me in order to avoid being waylaid/ intercepted on the way back home.
I was ashamed on the first day when I went to a city school. I hadn’t worn uniform as I was in the old school. So I distinguished myself by a blue green white striped shirt. When we stood up to greet the new teacher, he said that I should wear uniform like other classmates. After that, my father bought me 2 set of clothes, including 2 blue skirts & 2 white shirts. I couldn’t believe that I had worn them until the last year of elementary. That’s why I like to wear skirts at the special time.
I used to wait for my father coming for a long time. My school hour ended 4:30 pm, but I sometimes came back home at 7.00pm, even 9.00pm. I knew my father was very busy with his work and my mother also had a lot of housework to do. I didn’t blame them for lateness. I just felt self-pitying and lonely. That’s why my parents have complete control over my later decisions. I daren’t do anything I like as I couldn’t come back home on foot or by bicycle like before.
The first time I became a cribber was in the third grade. Will you believe that I was totally innocent at that moment? To prepare pupils for the final examination, my teacher gave us some homework assignments. I was industrious enough to finish all assignments. The exam took place, and one of questions on the test was the same as my exercisers. I simply thought that it wasted the time to do it again while I had already done it at home. Therefore, I opened my workbook and write it into my paper. Another teacher who taught at the next class came to near me and asked me close my workbook. He also talked to my teacher in the next room. Almost my classmates stared me in the face with the strange as well as despising sight. I didn’t understand why I couldn’t use it. Then I continued doing the test. I understood that I cheated at an exam until I was in high school. It was very ashamed.

Summer is over. It was strange that I stopped searching any news about you this summer. When I read again some entries in my diary, I no longer felt agitated as before. I thought I could forget you. However, when I am free today, when I re-arrange a couple of folders in my computer, when I see the folder ‘Vovinam’, I immediately go in the google website to find news or image about Vovinam in France & you. I gave up practicing Vovinam for years, but I couldn’t stop thinking about you. How could I get your image off my mind? Why do I still care of you so much? How are you lately? You must have stopped practicing Vovinam like me. If you do, I will find some your pictures. I can’t also see any pictures of your old brother. My new job at M.E.I (VN) Co.

When I was at school, I wished that I could work for a company in the district 2 where I was born and grown up. That’s why I managed to get a full time job as a general accountant at M.E.I (VN) projects engineering & Construction Company. However, I think I won’t be working here long although it’s quite good place to work. For one thing, all staffs here very intellectual, and they have high degree as well as wide & professional knowledge. The pay also is pretty good. Besides, in reference to working conditions, I have an opportunity to work directly in the accounting system. Another thing, it’s only 6 kilometers travel from where I live.

Almost people here seem happy to me, but I feel there is a distance between them and me. I know the way thinking of mine still looks like a teenager. Of course, it doesn’t belong to the mature and wise world of them. I can get along with someone, but it’s difficult for me to share my feelings with them.

About my jobs, I feel comfortable and have no any pressure. My primary responsibility is entering all transactions into the accounting system, especially all items of expenditure in cash, avenue, depreciation, and salary payable. Of course, the chief accountant and the cashier will enter their special transactions. After that, I will print all vouchers, checking the relative signature, and classifying them following the ordinary number and their types. I am also charge in monthly taxation reports and keeping my eyes in receivable amount.

The chief accountant choppily offers me what to do. Sometimes I feel embarrassed how to do. I hate this. I like to be assigned clearly and chronological

The main reason I want to leave here is that I like to speak English with upper bosses in a foreign company. I need to use my English which I have studied for a long time in the real life. It’s waste not to use it. Only written English is used here.

I never regret making a decision to work here. You don’t know how much I am happy to work for a local company.
